Help older Australians receive the quality care they require

As the population continues to age, the Australian 2021 Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety identified the need to raise the standards of care and strengthen the capabilities of the workforce that cares for the older person.

It is estimated that by 2066, one in five Australians will be aged over 65 – over two million of whom will be older than 85 and for this reason promoting healthy ageing is essential.

A wide range of service providers are involved in the care of the older person, however, negative stereotypes, assumptions and biases surrounding the ageing process have shaped the way services are designed and care provided.

While providers are knowledgeable in their specific area of expertise, they may not be sufficiently prepared to provide care that is person-centric, integrated and supports the diverse complex needs of the older person.

QUT Online’s Graduate Certificate in Care of the Aged is designed for those who wish to specialise in older persons’ care. It will advance your skills and knowledge and develop your professional identity in the care of the older person.

The specialised skills you acquire will inform your understanding of healthy ageing and appropriate health assessment frameworks, while equipping you with a nuanced understanding of age-specific health practices such as skin and wound care and caring for the older person living with dementia.

There are many rewarding job opportunities within the aged care sector.

Why study this course? To develop specialised skills and therefore, work effectively when caring for the older person across a range of healthcare, community across home-based settings.
